Workplace bullying can be stopped.
If you know the means to prevent it from happening to you or to a colleague then you can put an end to the nightmare. Yes, you can stop that unceasing bullying behavior.
You can resort to several remedies such as legal means that prohibits bullying acts in many different forms.
But before seeking the protection of law, you can actually do something yourself to make it stop. With proper knowledge and enough courage to fight the bully you can stop it. Not only will you be able to set yourself free but because of you make sure the bully stops his or her negative actions. This will improve your own mental well-being and improve the atmosphere in your team.
Here are some steps you can take to counter workplace bullying:
- Be aware of the circumstances that surround workplace bullying. Understand and be aware of bullying behaviors and how they take place. This allows you to immediately recognize the first signs of it happening whether to you or to a colleague.
- Approach the proper authorities within your organization. Especially look for someone you know you can trust. Remaining conscious of the bullying behavior allows you to take preventive measures. This usually stops the situation from escalating
- Always make sure you document your experience. It will aid you in seeing through the whole situation. Also, it can also be used as evidence should you reach the point of filing formal complaints against the bully.
- Be sensitive to others who may also be experiencing the same feelings. You may file a complaint as a group which could give more credibility to your case.
- If necessary, gather up the courage to confront the bully. Objectively lay down the unacceptable behavior that he or she is showing. This is much better than attacking the person. Make sure you try to resolve the matter in a more peaceful manner. A positive and productive dialogue needs to start between opposing parties.
- Be conscious of those who show signs of being bullied. Or when someone confides with you about having these problems. Take these messages seriously. By doing so you will be able to lend an ear to a colleague and can perhaps help in eventually solving the problem.
- When acting as a mediator between the two parties, be sure to objectively hear both sides. Assess who's telling the truth by examining the circumstances that surround the issue.
- Be mindful of the problems going on within your circle of authority. If you are the manager or supervisor who hears about unpleasant behaviors being manifested you need to intervene as early as possible. Continue to monitor the whole event to be certain it will not escalate into something unstoppable. This of course is even more damaging to the people involved and the entire organization.
- Set and live by the guidelines for appropriate actions and behaviors in the workplace. As much as possible, if you are in authority, give focus on the positive relationships. Show your employees that these relationships promote cooperation and mutual support. It also minimizes workplace aggression.
- Whether a victim or a witness, have the courage and will to put a stop to this problem. If it is not allowed from happening then it is likely it will not happen.
It is not impossible to stop workplace bullying. If you are strong enough to fight for what's right then there's no room left for those who have intentions of inflicting abusive bullying behaviors. We all can stop bullying. You can do this as well!
